THE leader of a disability forum has criticised the coalition government’s plans to change disability living allowance, claiming they are built on ‘myth and misrepresentation’.

GARY JACKSON

People with disabilities currently receive Disability Living Allowance, which helps meets extra costs such as home help or
transport, associated with a disability. But in January, minister for disabled people, MP Maria Miller, suggested replacing the DLA with
Personal Independence Payments, which assess people’s needs according tomobility. The consultation on the proposals closed on February 14 and MPs are considering the findings before the Welfare Reform Bill goes before parliament again.Gary Jackson, chairman of South Copeland Disability Group and the county wide Centre for Independent Living says the group has written to each of the county’s MPs seeking their support to oppose the bill.Mr Jackson said: “The changes to the DLA are built on myth and misrepresentation. The Department for Work and Pensions’ own statistics show the DLA is an allowance that’s not abused, so they are not going to save money by weeding out people who should not be claiming it.“Given the inclusion of this change
in the bill took place before the so-called consultation on DLA reform was completed makes an absolute mockery of Maria Miller, Minister for the Disabled, asking for views from disability organisations and disabled people.“It’s very hard to see how Ms Miller can now expect to maintain any kind of credibility within the disabled community.“Something they are looking at is the business of wheelchair users. If you have a wheelchair we are classed as more mobile, so will not need mobility allowance.“There’s a significant body of people that think some of the government policies and the way it is going about them is contravening UN protocol.”A spokeswoman from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said: “We need to reform Disability Living
Allowance (DLA) to make it work better for the disabled people who rely on it and to ensure that the £12bn spent on it every year goes where it is needed.“We have consulted widely with disabled people and disability organisations and are working with them to get the changes right.

WORKING WITH THE PRACTICE MANAGER AT THE MILLOM DOCTORS SURGERY TO HAVE AUTOMATIC DOORS FITTED TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR ELDERLY AND DISABLED TO GAIN ENTRY.
ALSO TRYING TO OBTAIN TWO DISABLED PARKING SPACES OUTSIDE THE MILLOM SURGERY WITH CBC HIGHWAYS, SO THERE IS NOT A LOT OF WALKING INVOLVED WHEN ATTENDING THE SURGERY FOR AN APPOINTMENT

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AS MORE AND MORE COUNCILS ARE MAKING DISABLED PARKING THE SAME AS NON-DISABLED PARKING, THIS IS NO PROBLEM BUT THERE MUST BE AN ALLOWANCE OF EXTRA TIME TO ALLOW FOR DISABLED TO GET OUT OF THE CAR, BUILD UP WHEELCHAIRS/SCOOTERS AND DO THE SHOPPING FOR INSTANCE PAY FOR FIRST HOUR, THEN HAVE AN HOUR FREE.
WE ARE SUPPORTING NATIONAL DISABLED GROUPS IN THIER CAMPAIGN TO GET SOME FAIRER SYSTEMS INSTALLED

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER THE CUMBRIA INDEPENDENT LIVING FORUM HAD TALKS WITH SLDC AND LDNPA THEY BOTH HAVE AGREED TO ALLOW ONE EXTRA HOUR ON TOP OF WHATEVER YOU PURCHASE FREE

DISABLED CAR SPACE OUTSIDE WELLINGTON SURGERY  MILLOM

T
he SCDG are trying to have a disabled parking space outside the Doctors surgery in Wellington Street, so disabled can park nearer ther surgery, rather than walking too far, or parking on the yellow lines opposite, causing traffic problems, but some-one has objected, causing the suggestion goes back to Highways Dept for re-consideration..

Regardless of a disability group requesting the space, one or two people can object and have it prosponed, in this day and age  WHY
we are not asking for an extra space, there is still all of Wellington street for able-bodied parking, and a lot park on the yellow lines any way.
